On the ‘withdrawn’ bill

February 5, 2011

Feb 4, 2011: The PPP government’s declaration that Sherry Rehman has withdrawn her proposed blasphemy laws amendment bill (which she has not, because the bill was never tabled) appears to be based on political expediency and a tactical move to take the wind out of the sails of the ‘religous right’ that are using the issue to rally support. Although disappointing and a shameful step backwards, it is not a body blow to our overall fight and long term struggle. We will continue to highlight the gross misuse of this controversial law, that is cynically used for personal or partisan purposes as supported by empirical data on cases registered since the passage of this law. We will also continue to highlight the urgent need to protect innocent victims through procedural checks and safeguards as recommended by Sherry Rehman in her completely misunderstood proposed Bill. These ups and downs are part of politics – one day we will prevail.

She should have never put forward this bill at all.It was a gimmick to score political points. At last she got the point and withdrew the bill at last.
